What the heck is an italian sandwich? Glad you asked! It's not a sub, a hero or a grinder. It's unique to Maine, as far as we know. Start with an italian roll, add a meat (most often ham, but lots of people like salami italians), cheese, sliced onions, green peppers, pickles and tomatoes. Finish it off with a little oil and salt and pepper. Some places add black olives.
